India and Canada Reset Ties at India Energy Week 2026
The India Energy Week 2026, held in Goa from January 19 to January 23, became an unexpected turning point in global energy diplomacy. Beyond industry panels and investment pitches, the event marked a significant diplomatic reset between India and Canada after years of strained relations.
Canadian Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson attended the conference, becoming the first Canadian cabinet-level official to do so at this scale. His presence symbolized a thaw following diplomatic tensions that had stalled trade and cooperation since 2023.
Energy cooperation is now leading the rapprochement. Discussions included a long-term uranium supply agreement—potentially spanning 10 years and worth billions of dollars—to fuel India’s expanding nuclear energy program. Canada is also positioning itself as a supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to India.
Additionally, both sides are exploring joint ventures in critical minerals—lithium, cobalt, nickel—essential for batteries and clean energy technologies. Talks are also underway to restart negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which could resume as early as March 2026.
Africa’s Strategic Opportunity
Africa stands at the center of this evolving energy geometry. India is already a major investor in Nigerian oil and gas, Mozambican LNG, and East African renewables. Canada, meanwhile, has deep mining interests in Zambia, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As major powers seek secure and diversified energy supplies, African countries gain leverage. The competition creates room to demand technology transfer, local processing, job creation, and fairer contract terms. India Energy Week also featured African delegations, highlighting the continent’s growing relevance in global energy security.
In a multipolar world, Africa is no longer merely a supplier of raw materials—it is a strategic partner whose choices can shape global outcomes.
