UN Could Run Out of Money by July – Guterres Gives Urgent Warning

ANTONIO GUTERRES

Secretary-General António Guterres sent a formal letter to all member states on January 28, 2026, warning that the United Nations faces “imminent financial collapse” unless countries pay their full assessed contributions on time.

He stated clearly that cash reserves for the regular budget could be completely exhausted by July 2026—just a few months from now.

At the end of 2025, unpaid dues totaled more than $1.57 billion, with the United States owing the largest amount—around 95% of some estimates—though several other countries are also significantly behind. Guterres explained that after years of aggressive cost-cutting measures, including reductions in staff, travel, and conferences, the organization has almost no flexibility left.

For Africa, this situation is especially serious. The United Nations funds essential work across the continent: peacekeeping missions in Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic; humanitarian aid in Sudan, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa; and development programmes in health, education, refugee support, and election monitoring. If funding shrinks or stops, these operations will contract—fewer peacekeepers protecting civilians, less aid reaching displaced families, and slower progress on sustainable development goals. The people in the most vulnerable situations will suffer the most.

At the same time, this crisis creates an opportunity for change. African member states, working through the African Group at the UN, can push harder for reforms: more equitable burden-sharing, increased voluntary contributions from wealthier nations, and structural adjustments that protect mission-critical programmes like peacekeeping and humanitarian response.

A stable and adequately funded United Nations remains vital for conflict resolution, humanitarian support, and long-term development across the continent. This warning could be the moment that forces the necessary action.
