African Union Backs Somalia’s Unity as Egypt Sends Troops

SOMALI

The African Union has once again declared strong support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity. The message is clear: Somalia must remain one country, and no external actor should divide it or interfere in its internal affairs.

Somalia has battled the extremist group Al-Shabaab for many years. The AU says continued support is needed to help Somalia defeat terrorism and strengthen its government institutions. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia) is gradually handing over security responsibilities to Somali forces, but concerns remain about whether local forces are fully prepared.

The situation has grown more complex following two major developments.

First, Israel recently recognized Somaliland as an independent state. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but until now, no country had officially recognized it. Somalia strongly rejects the move, insisting Somaliland is still part of its territory. The African Union also condemned Israel’s recognition, calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

Second, Egypt has deployed troops to Somalia. Egyptian officials say the move is meant to support Somalia’s government in fighting Al-Shabaab and to protect stability in the Red Sea region. Egypt describes the deployment as assistance to a fellow African nation.

Supporters argue that Egypt’s involvement shows African countries are taking responsibility for solving African problems. They say additional training and military support could help Somalia stabilize faster.

However, critics worry about foreign troops operating inside Somalia. Some fear it could create new tensions or complicate local politics. Others point out that words of unity are not enough — Somalia also needs investment in roads, schools, hospitals, and jobs so young people are not drawn to extremist groups.

Somalia’s stability affects the entire continent. Continued conflict could lead to more refugees, more trafficking, and wider insecurity across East and West Africa. For now, the AU’s message is firm: Somalia must stay united, and Africa must support its recovery.
