Headline: Nollywood Drama Turns Legal: Angela Okorie Granted N5m Bail After Remand in Suleja Prison Over Alleged Cyberstalking of Mercy Johnson

The conflict between the two actresses dates back several years, with public disagreements surfacing periodically on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Tensions reportedly intensified in mid-2025, when Okorie made allegations against Johnson, including claims that the latter was battling a serious illness and urging her to seek forgiveness from those she had allegedly wronged. These posts drew sharp responses from Johnson’s allies, including actress Regina Daniels, who clashed with Okorie online and defended her colleague. At one point, Okorie referred to Senator Ned Nwoko (Regina Daniels husband) in derogatory terms, calling him an “ancestor” and refusing association with what she described as “dirty people.” Okorie later issued a public apology to both Johnson and Nwoko, expressing regret and a desire for peace.
Despite the apparent reconciliation attempt in 2025, the underlying issues persisted. Johnson had publicly warned in early 2026 that cyberbullying directed at her and her family would no longer be tolerated, signaling a shift toward stronger action against online harassment.
The situation reached a boiling point in late January 2026. On Tuesday, January 27, operatives from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) arrested Angela Okorie at her residence in Lagos. She was reportedly held overnight at Panti Police Station in Yaba due to flight unavailability, then flown to Abuja the following morning for court proceedings. The arrest stemmed from a petition filed on behalf of Mercy Johnson, accusing Okorie (and a co-conspirator, Ifeoma Mbonu, who remains at large) of cyberstalking, criminal defamation, and harassment under Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act.
Prosecutors alleged that Okorie conspired to publish defamatory posts on social media, including serious accusations labeling Johnson a “blood-sucking demon” and other harmful claims intended to bully and harass. A Federal High Court in Abuja arraigned Okorie on Wednesday, January 28, on charges bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation. The court ordered her remanded at Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State pending further hearings, as the charges were deemed serious enough to warrant custody.
Okorie’s management, through Moving Train Entertainment Limited, quickly disputed the allegations, insisting she had not engaged in cyberbullying, harassment, or defamation against Johnson directly or indirectly. They acknowledged prior “disagreements” between the actresses but maintained her innocence and criticized the handling of the arrest, including the seizure of phones from household members and the stressful conditions during the operation.
The case sparked widespread reactions in the Nollywood community. Filmmaker Stanley Ontop visited Okorie in prison and publicly appealed for forgiveness, questioning the rapid judicial process and urging Mercy Johnson to “temper justice with mercy.” Actress Doris Ogala initially reacted critically but later shifted to pleading for mercy, claiming Johnson promised Okorie’s release, potentially as early as January 30, 2026 after listening to appeals. Ogala also dragged in unrelated industry claims, alleging Johnson had previously blocked her from roles.
On Friday, January 30, 2026, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted Angela Okorie bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety in like sum, following her re-arraignment on an amended seven-count charge. This development allows her release pending trial, marking a significant turn in what has become one of Nollywood’s most high-profile cybercrime cases involving celebrities.
The incident highlights the growing intersection of celebrity disputes, social media, and Nigeria’s cybercrime laws, turning what began as typical industry “beef” into a courtroom battle with potential lasting implications for both actresses’ careers and reputations. Further proceedings are expected as the case continues.
