Former Police Reservist Wiandre Pretorius Dies by Suicide Amid Madlanga Commission Scrutiny
A dramatic and tragic turn has unfolded in one of South Africa’s high-profile inquiries into police corruption and criminality, with the death of 41 year old Wiandre Pretorius, a former police reservist and police informant who had been implicated in proceedings before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Pretorius died by suicide on Saturday night, February 7, 2026, after reportedly shooting himself at a petrol filling station in Brakpan on Gauteng’s East Rand. The incident occurred in the presence of his partner, who has been described in reports as his fiancée and a serving police sergeant. South African Police Service (SAPS) national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the details, stating that an inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the ongoing Madlanga Commission, formally known as the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System. Pretorius’s name surfaced prominently during testimony last year from Marius van der Merwe, known as “Witness D,” who implicated him in serious crimes.
Witness D alleged that Pretorius was involved in the 2022 torture and murder of Emmanuel Mbhense, a suspect whose body was later dumped in a dam. According to reports from the commission, Pretorius who was not a full time officer but had served as a reservist was accused of participating in the suffocation of Mbhense, among other acts. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) had finalized its probe into Mbhense’s death and referred the docket to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for consideration.
Pretorius was also confirmed as a person of interest in the subsequent murder of Witness D himself, who was assassinated after providing damning testimony. Police had questioned Pretorius in connection with van der Merwe’s killing and seized his devices and personal firearm.
Just days before his death, on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Pretorius survived what he described as an assassination attempt. Unknown gunmen opened fire on his white Isuzu bakkie outside his home in Van Dyk Park, Boksburg, riddling the vehicle with at least 16 bullets. He escaped unharmed, but the attack heightened concerns about witness safety and potential retaliation linked to the commission’s revelations.
CCTV footage from the filling station has emerged showing Pretorius in a heated argument with his partner prior to the incident. Police are now probing whether his death is connected to broader criminal syndicates, including the possibility that such groups may be eliminating associates to prevent further disclosures.
The Madlanga Commission continues to expose alleged corruption, extrajudicial killings, and political interference within the criminal justice system. Pretorius’s death has raised fresh questions about the protection of individuals implicated in or connected to its proceedings.
Police have emphasized that investigations into both the Mbhense murder and related cases remain active, with potential arrests looming. Pretorius’s partner is reportedly facing suspension from SAPS and could be among those implicated in ongoing probes.
This developing story underscores the high stakes and dangers surrounding South Africa’s efforts to root out systemic corruption in law enforcement. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as inquiries intensify.
