Russia and Tanzania Deepen Ties — Opportunity or Risk for Africa?
Russia and Tanzania have strengthened their relationship following high-level talks in Moscow, focusing on energy, mining, trade, and military cooperation. Russia is seeking greater engagement with Africa as Western sanctions over the Ukraine war limit its global options.
For Tanzania, the partnership offers potential benefits. Russian investment in natural gas and mining could create jobs, boost electricity supply, and increase government revenue. Military cooperation may also bring training and equipment to support regional security.
However, critics warn that such deals can come with hidden costs. Large loans may increase debt burdens, while mining projects can damage the environment and displace local communities if poorly regulated. There are also concerns that military cooperation could deepen conflicts rather than resolve them.
The key for Tanzania — and other African countries watching closely — is negotiation. Strong local employment rules, environmental protections, and transparent contracts will determine whether this partnership becomes a win-win or another costly dependency.
