North Korea’s Teenage Heir Apparent
PYONGYANG, North Korea – In a move that has ignited global speculation and intense scrutiny, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appears to be solidifying the path for his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, to become his successor. Recent observations by South Korea’s intelligence agency and her increasingly prominent public appearances suggest a significant shift in the dynastic leadership of the reclusive nation.
South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported on February 12, 2026, that Kim Ju Ae has advanced to the stage of “successor designation”. This assessment is based on a “range of circumstances,” including her heightened visibility at official events alongside her father. Believed to be around 13 years old, Kim Ju Ae has been a consistent presence at high-profile gatherings, from military parades to visits to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun.
One of the most notable indicators of her elevated status was her first known foreign visit in September 2025, when she accompanied Kim Jong Un to Beijing. The trip, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in World War II, saw her stepping off her father’s armoured train at Beijing Railway Station, an event closely watched by international observers. Such public displays are highly symbolic in North Korea, where state media carefully curates images to convey specific messages about power and authority. Reports indicate that she has been depicted standing taller than or walking beside her father, a rare positioning for anyone other than Kim Jong Un himself. Furthermore, there are suggestions that she has begun to voice opinions on state policies, leading some to consider her the de facto second-highest leader.
Kim Ju Ae is the only known child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, although rumours persist of an older, unacknowledged son. Her existence first came to light in 2013 through American basketball player Dennis Rodman. She made her debut on state television in 2022, inspecting an intercontinental ballistic missile with her father, an image that began to soften her father’s formidable public persona.
